SANDRA ENTERLINE

ABOUT THE ARTIST
I drill holes because I like to. My jewelry is reminiscent of industrial relics. Thin gauge silver is perforated by hand with tiny holes, creating an organic quality that transforms spare, hollow constructions. The density and pattern of miniscule perforations lends an indeterminable surface to the object. The pieces vibrate; the interior and exterior shift with changing light. My jewelry is based on a fascination with fragility, preciousness and the mystery of half-visible objects glimpsed through hundreds of tiny perforations. Refined shapes alternately cage, contain and reveal a golden interior. I make simple, sculptural objects that are complex and layered, discovered over time.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Growing up in Northwestern Pennsylvania, Sandra Enterline has been inspired by abandoned factories since she was a child. The factories in her memories rise in mysterious forms, much like hulking cathedrals. However, these cathedrals of industry are immense and dark, yet strangely fragile. Enterline is perhaps best known for her perforated jewelry, which strikes a balance between elements of industry and fragility. The countless apertures that dot her pieces allow light to pass through, creating a vibrating surface of light and shadow. In her recent work, fragile glass shards are suspended in industrial blue-black steel —evoking delicate windows that punctuate the abandoned factories of her childhood. As the wearer moves through space, the shifting dynamic between transparency and density evinces the complexity of Enterline’s contemporary work.
