ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kate Dannenberg is a jeweler and metalsmith living in South Philadelphia. With thoughtful craftsmanship and attention to tactile experience she creates jewelry and objects informed by the visual qualities of the natural world. She is interested in the way humans physically interact with precious and everyday objects—the way these interactions affect both the person and the object. Through her work as teaching artist and curator she strives to uplift the jewelry and craft communities through inclusion, education, and enthusiasm. Kate’s work is made by hand from recycled and responsibly sourced materials.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I make objects of functional adornment for the body and home inspired by the natural world and by the materials I use. Centering metal, I incorporate gemstones, diamonds, wood, and stone; primarily using recycled, salvaged, and second hand materials. My work is made by hand with thoughtful attention to craftsmanship and tactility—direct fabrication techniques inform both the appearance and the feel of each piece. Organic textures and forms suggest animal, vegetable, and mineral references—a rocky surface, an abstracted body, a leaf, a seed pod—without directly representing any one subject. Functional and beautiful, I bring art objects into everyday life—not only precious, but loved. Utensils are meant to be held and used, appreciated for their form, function, and craftsmanship. I want my work to feel so good that you want to use or wear it everyday, and when you do, I want it to hold up beyond a lifetime.
