ARTIST STATEMENT
Robert Phillips’ work distinctly balances color with form and the nature of the material. His pieces explore the elements of transparency and reflection with an attention to detail. Through an extensive combination of hot shaping and sculptural cold working techniques, Phillips is able to illuminate primary aspects of the glass.
Phillips’ glass experience began in the studio environment and continued abroad. Starting as a glassblowing assistant in his early twenties, his classical education focused on the fundamentals and techniques of working the material. Phillips evolved his aesthetic working with Scandinavian crystal in Sweden for almost a decade. Today, he combines the knowledge and techniques he has learned into his own sculptural endeavors.
Phillips has worked with artists and galleries around the world, including Rob Adamson, Mark Lorenzi, Susan Shapiro and Andrew Magdanz of Avon Place Glass (MA), Louis Sclafani of Louis Sclafani-Belltower Glassworks (NY), and Hanne Dreutler and Arthur Zirnsack of Studio Åhus (Sweden).
Robert Phillips works as a free-lance glassblower while making his own creations. He continues to work with glass masters from Italy, Sweden and the United States. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and in Europe.
Prominent collections include the Art in Embassies Program and the Norton Family collection.
