Formerly from the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, Joseph currently lives & works in the Philadelphia area. He received his undergraduate degree from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY, and relocated to Philadelphia in 1991 to pursue his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at Tyler School of Art and Architecture of Temple University. As the recipient of a Tyler Galleries Assistantship and his position as Assistant to the Gallery Director, he gained invaluable experience as an art handler, exhibition preparator and curator. In 1999, he acquired a nationally respected American fine art and craft gallery which he managed for 20 years with the sole mission of representing and promoting a collective of artists & craftspeople.
In 2020 he returned to his studio with an invigorated focus on ink painting as a result of residing closer to home. Originally trained as a printmaker, he often adapts the complex application of printed inks into a more fluid approach utilizing templates and subtractive methods to attain comparable translucent layers. Through his use of nontoxic, water based inks this pliable medium allows the mining of multiple pigment layers to reveal dormant veils of underpainting. The impetus for the excavation of these strata of ink is to offer liberation to the unseen. Loosely based upon preliminary sketches of collected organic materials, his recent series of botanical-based paintings reference floral specimens, the papery bark of birch trees and the branching growth pattern of lichen.
