For many decades Harry Anderson has been one of Philadelphia's most beloved artists. As an early member of the renowned "Dumpster Divers", Anderson has been an avid collector of 1930's to 1950's stylized functional design, a full time studio artist, best known for his creative lighting. Although some of his sculptural lighting designs do in fact have functional, the joy in his work is how he combines found pieces of lamps, old watering hoses, gears and cogs removed from table and wall clocks, discarded steel, brass and tin tools, kitchen utensils, any form that is unique in design, scale, shape and color. Anderson rarely adds painted color as it is important that the history of the elements remain. Anderson literally reanimates discarded and damaged refuse. Lamps become small rocket ships, running figures as well as stunningly paired materials when examined closely reveal his brilliant eye color, scale and proportion. Old pool cue balls are stacked with vintage ashtrays, old rubber garden hoses, vintage press glass with a dinner plate and teacup added for the perfect balance of color, texture and movement. His work is brilliantly crafted which is in reverence to these objects he has coveted and loved for so many years. His work can be found in public, private and corporate collections throughout the United States including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is a National Endowment for the Arts recipient as well as the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. One might consider Anderson a modern hunter/gatherer. Anderson is very urban.
